Tom Rippeth

Born in 1966, Tom Rippeth has lived in North Wales since 1987. He is a graduate of the Universities of Reading and Wales and currently a Reader in Physical Oceanography and Climate at Bangor University and a visting scientist at the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory in Liverpool. As a scientist Tom has won two prestigious environmental research fellowships, published over 50 research papers and has been invited to speak at numerous international conferences and at the National Assembly in Cardiff.

Tom has stood for national office twice, on both occasions for the Wrexham constituency. In 2003 he contested the constituency for the elections to the National Assembly of Wales and then in 2005 for Westminster. At the 2005 General Election achieved second place behind Labour with a swing a 7% from Labour to Lib Dem.

His main political interest is fighting for local jobs and businesses, while taking a keen interest in climate change action and the development of a green economy at local, national and global level. Locally he has a record of fighting for local serivces, leading campaigns to save local Post Office from closure and against Assembly proposals to force patients to travel from North Wales to South Wales for NHS treatment.

Outside politics Tom is a musician, playing the Trombone in a New Orleans Jazzband, and is a keen cyclist. In the last couple of years Tom has done the coast to coast cycle ride, as well as cycling around the Island of Mull and the length of the outer Hebrides. He also enjoys getting out on his mountain bike to places like Llyn Brenig and Llandegla. He is also cross-country skier and fell walker. Tom is a Welsh learner, having passed the level equivalent exam.
